Surgical Team

Dr Licina is fortunate to work with a highly specialised surgical team, most of whom have been together for many years. Our Surgical Team includes an Assistant Surgeon and Anaesthetists.

Dr Mark Munro

Dr Mark Munro is a graduate of the University of Queensland Medical School.

Following graduation, he spent three years at the Royal Brisbane Hospital undertaking further training, during which time he also served as Acting Superintendent in regional Queensland hospitals.

With an interest in research he spent 12 months as a Senior Research Officer with the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology, University of Queensland.

This work at the Vision, touch and Hearing Research Centre led to a publication in Science 1993; 262: 1072-1074 “Unidirectional Coupling of Gap-Junctions Between Neuroglia”.

Dr Munro spent several years working in the area of Ophthalmology including consulting, administering regional anaesthesia and surgical assisting. During this time he passed the Part 1 Fellowship Examination for Royal Australian College of Surgeons and Royal Australian college of Ophthalmologists.

A more general interest in surgery led him to begin work as an assistant surgeon in the fields of General Surgery, Gynaecology and Orthopaedic Surgery.

He has now been assisting Dr. Paul Licina with his spinal surgery for over 10 years and has experience in more than 12,000 operative procedures.

Dr Ben Loh

Dr Ben Loh graduated in medicine at the University of Queensland in 1989. His interest in the specialty of anaesthesia developed early in his career. As an anaesthetic registrar, he worked in Redcliffe Hospital, Queen Elizabeth Hospital (Hong Kong) and Maryborough Hospital before completing his training at the Royal Brisbane Hospital.

In 2001, he commenced in private practice, joining St. Andrew’s Anaesthetic Private Practice for a few years until the main bulk of his work took him to Northside Anaesthesia, where he remains until the present time.

His main clinical interests are anaesthesia for spine surgery and knee replacement surgery. He conducts anaesthetics for several spinal surgery lists each week including those of Dr Licina with whom he has worked consistently for over ten years.

Dr Loh has appointment as a consultant anaesthetist in all major hospitals in Brisbane. He is also a clinical tutor at the Wesley Medical School. He is a member of the Australian Society of Anaesthetists and Australian Medical Association.

He enjoys travelling and dabbles in travel photography. In quieter times, he loves reading books, especially books with historical connotation.

Dr David Hill

Dr David Hill graduated from medicine at the University of Queensland in 1989. He worked in North Queensland for 7 years, which included time as a GP Anaesthetist and time with the Royal Flying Doctors Service.

He left General Practice in 1996 to commence his formal anaesthetic training. This included time at Queensland’s major hospitals as well as time in England and Canada.

After completing his training in 2000 he undertook further studies at the Harvard Medical School in Boston (USA), where he completed a research project looking at anaesthesia for scoliosis surgery.

Since 2001 he has worked in Brisbane, joining Wickham Terrace Anaesthesia in 2003 and teaming up with Dr Paul Licina in 2004. He continues to provide teaching to anaesthetic trainees and paramedics through his public hospital appointments. He is happily married with 4 kids.
